Over the past few months we have been reading about some scientists at CERN who believed they had fired some neutrinos through solid rock and they had arrived faster than light would have traveled over the same distance. The Europeans at CERN failed to note that a similar error had been made a few years ago during a test in the United States. The other thing about this situation that to me was amazing, was the fact that all the reporting agencies referred to "Einstein's Theory", as if this was some wild idea that Albert had thought up without any verification.
The truth is there is a mathematical foundation for the statement that something with mass cannot exceed the speed of light. The fact is, something with mass can't even reach the speed of light, although something with as little mass as a neutrino can come close. The formula is: M= m / (sq.root) of 1-V sq./C sq.
M is mass in motion
m is mass at rest
V is velocity in km per second
C is speed of light (approx. 300,000 km per second)
So 1- V sq./C sq. is under the Square Root sign, as V approaches the speed of light the fraction V sq./C sq. starts to approach 1/1. That would be the square root of 1-1/1, which is zero, an impossibility. In addition, at 270,000 km per second the mass has already risen to twice the mass at rest. As the speed of the object approaches the speed of light the fraction gets closer and closer to Zero driving the mass toward infinity.
An infinitely massive object is not possible. You will recall Einstein also stated that an object's length is shortened in the direction of travel as it approaches the speed of light. That formula is similar to the above formula. It is: L= (l) x (sq. root) of 1-V sq./C sq.
L is length in motion
(l) is length at rest
So here, as an object approaches the speed of light it's length is half of it's at rest length in the direction of travel at 270,000 km per second and gets shorter with increasing speed. At the speed of light, it has no length in the direction of travel, an impossibility.
So based on CERN's findings of an object with mass that traveled faster than the speed of light, the object would be more massive than infinity and have less length than zero. Why those boys would make such a statement in public and not immediately be called on it makes this whole episode sad for the scientific community.
